What Challenge Is Teaching You?
Growth and uncomfortable
I often say to people, “Growth happens in the uncomfortable.”
But I don’t just say that to others. I ask it of myself as well.
Am I uncomfortable?
Is this stretching me?
Is this challenge asking something more of me?
Recently, I was asked to speak to a group. Straight away, before I even said yes, I noticed myself scanning for the comfort spots.
I began bargaining with the opportunity.
I thought, I’m happy to do it, as long as I can facilitate.
Facilitation is familiar territory for me. It’s a space where I feel comfortable, useful, and confident. But this opportunity also had a second part to it — one that would stretch me.
It was an unfamiliar audience.
A different venue.
A different environment.
And if I’m honest, that discomfort immediately exposed itself in my thinking.
But growth often does.
It tends to sit just outside what feels predictable, controlled, and comfortable.
And yet, I’m glad I said yes.
Because sometimes the challenge in front of us isn’t there to expose our weakness. It’s there to expand our capacity.
Challenges have a way of interrupting comfort. They unsettle what feels safe and familiar. But they also reveal things we may never have discovered otherwise.
Patience.
Perspective.
Strength.
Humility.
Courage.
Often, the trials we resist most are the ones that shape us most deeply.
The question isn’t always:
“Why is this happening?”
A better question might be:
“What is this teaching me?”
Because challenge can either harden you —
or grow you.
And often, the difference is whether you are willing to reflect, adapt, and keep moving forward.
3 Learnings From Challenge
1️⃣ Trials Reveal Character
Pressure has a way of exposing what is already within us.
When I was asked to speak, my first reaction revealed something. It showed me where I felt comfortable, but it also showed me where I still had room to grow.
That’s not failure.
That’s awareness.
Challenge helps us recognise the gap between where we are and where we could grow next.
2️⃣ Hard Seasons Develop Capacity
Growth often requires stretching.
What challenges me may not challenge you. What stretches you may feel natural to someone else.
That’s why comparison is unhelpful.
The important question isn’t whether someone else finds it easy. The question is whether it is stretching you in the right direction.
Capacity grows when we lean into the right discomfort.
3️⃣ Reflection Creates Wisdom
Lessons are easily lost when we move too quickly past them.
If we don’t pause long enough to ask what the challenge taught us, we may miss the growth hidden inside it.
Reflection turns experience into learning.
It helps us recognise what strengthened us, what stretched us, and what needs to shift next time.
Final Thought
Sometimes the challenge isn’t blocking your future.
Sometimes it’s building it.
The uncomfortable place may be the very place where your confidence, courage, and capacity are being formed.
So, when discomfort shows up, pause before you dismiss it.
Ask yourself:
“What is this challenge teaching me?”
Because growth may be sitting just beyond your comfort zone.
