Legacy Begins with the Small Moments

The word legacy often makes us think of something far in the future, what we’ll leave behind when we’re gone. But in truth, legacy is built in the present, in the everyday moments, in what little eyes see and absorb long before they can understand the words.

Recently, I was walking hand-in-hand with my 22-month-old grandson. Just a simple moment, yet deeply significant. I know these times matter because legacy starts now with spending time.

It’s too late to suddenly decide, when they’re teenagers, that I want to be present, intentional, and invested. By then, their impressions are already being shaped by years of observation and other influences.

That’s why I make it an essential practice to spend time with each of my grandies. I want them to see consistency in my actions, to experience love and care, and to observe behaviours that I hope will guide them as they grow.

Whether at home or in the workplace, we are constantly building legacy through the examples we set. Our daily habits, our tone in conversation, how we treat others, and where we invest our time, these are the seeds being planted in the next generation.

3 Ways to help Build Legacy:

1️⃣ Be present in the small moments

At home, it’s the walk holding your child’s hand, sitting at the dinner table without distractions, or reading that bedtime story. These are the memories that shape their sense of belonging and worth.

At work, it’s showing up for your team, asking how they are and really listening, giving feedback that encourages, and being consistent in your presence. Small, intentional acts create an atmosphere where people feel valued and secure.

2️⃣ Model your values

At home, children learn more from what they see than what they’re told. If they see respect, patience, honesty, and kindness in you, they’re far more likely to live those values themselves.

At work, modelling values looks like integrity in decision-making, fairness in handling conflict, and humility in leadership. When you live out your values, you don’t just tell people what matters, you show them.

3️⃣ Invest intentionally

At home, legacy is built through time, attention, and care. It’s not about the grand gestures but the ongoing investment, turning off the phone, being available, showing love consistently.

At work, intentional investment means mentoring, coaching, and creating opportunities for growth. It’s making sure your influence outlives your position, because the people you’ve invested in will carry that forward.

"The legacy of heroes is the memory of a great name and the inheritance of a great example." — Benjamin Disraeli

Legacy is about the example you leave behind, in your children, your family, your team, and your community. Every moment you choose to live with integrity, presence, and purpose is an investment in something bigger than yourself.

Legacy isn’t taught, it’s modelled, your legacy is being written right now. The question is: What story do you want it to tell?

Reach Out, and let's take time to discover how we can progress together.

Remember daily to, 'Find value in your influence.' Your voice matters, and I'm excited to hear from and work with you!"
